Custom Closets Pay For Themselves Submitted by Ben Benkiran on May 19, 2009 - Home Organizing |

When you think of a custom closet, the first thought may be how wonderful it would be to get organized and make your life that much more enjoyable. Then reality sets in and you start thinking if you can afford it. Well, I’m here to say that you will see your return on this investment when you sell your home. You can easily add 1 to 1 and a half times the cost of the closet to the sale price of your house, if the other homes in your neighborhood were built without custom closets. If your neighbors already have custom closets, then you will gain in value to be on par with them. In the meantime, you could be enjoying the benefits of organization. Think of it as putting money in a piggy bank. Now let’s look at how much custom closets costs. A reach in closet, or wall closet, should run around $750 - $1500, depending on the length of the closet. A walk in closet or master closet, on average, can range from $2500 - $5000 again depending on size and contents. Basic hanging and shelving is the most economical, while finishes and moving parts (i.e. drawers and doors) tend to increase the cost. Choosing crown molding and other such enhancements may not be completely realize on your return, but they will bring an elegance to the closet that will leave a lasting impression on all who view it. In today’s tight market, stagers (people who “stage” your home to sell quickly) will first recommend some type of custom closet to give the seller a leg up on the competition. They know that when people buy homes they look at the kitchen first, then the bathrooms followed by the closets. Stagers also realize the importance of storage in a home and wind up putting in custom closet anyway, while the current homeowner never really gets a chance to enjoy them. Another benefit people do not readily see is the time savings. More space means less ironing, or picking out your next day’s outfit the night before and have it hanging on your valet rod, accessories and all. How would you like to have a jewelry drawer that displays all your favorite bracelets, broaches, earrings, necklaces and rings at a glance? Ever waste a half an hour looking for that other red shoe? These are all issues that you will no longer have to deal with when you commit to get organized. And custom closets are synonymous with your pledge to get organized. It’s never a bad time to upgrade your home. And today, more than ever, people are doing just that. The biggest issue is where to start. Just remember, custom closets will never steer you wrong. It ends up being one of those products you wonder how you ever lived without. So whether your making or receiving a “honey do list”, put custom closets at or near the top. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving… like 3 - 8 times a day! |
